Brazilian director Julia Murat’s much-lauded feature film debut, Found Memories, comes to PIFF 35.
Every morning, the aging Madalena wakes up to bake bread for her neighbor Antonio’s coffee shop. Day in, day out, the baker of the small town of Jotuomba follows the steps of long-observed daily rituals, where time move so slowly it feels as it if is not moving at all. Madalena holds tight to the memory of her dead husband while living out her elder years with her neighbors, all clinging to the distant memories of youth. The arrival of Rita, a young and vibrant photographer, quickens the pace of life for Madalena, Antonio, the local priest and their few friends as they go about life in their small and sleepy town. The two women, so divided by age, forge a strong relationship– one that leaves a lasting mark on both of their lives, and on the lives of all the residents of Jotuomba.
Showing at PIFF35 Saturday, February 11th, at 6 PM (Lloyd Mall 6), Monday, February 13th at 8:45pm (Pioneer Place 5) and Thursday, February 16th, at 8:45pm.
