AYT #33: The Weakest Summer In The World?

This week, we start with a review of the bootlegging action drama Lawless and then move in to a look back at this past summer movie season, assessing the disappointments, pleasant surprises and our acting MVP. In our last segment, we run through three awesome retrospective screenings happening at The Hollywood Theatre and two at The Laurelhurst Theater.

  1. You know what’s sad? I read that all the ADR for Bane was actually redone very close to the last minute (and no doubt at great expense) due to test audience feedback! So as awful as it was…that was the improved version. *sigh*

  3. Great assessment of the summer, guys.

Lawless was a bummer. The film and the title of the film. I even liked Hardy’s grunt-heavy performance and admired that Guy Pearce was swinging for the fences (even if he struck out). It just didn’t use any of the badass elements it had going for it (cast, violence, nudity) in a way that mattered. Just sat there and refused to make any element emotionally connected to the next.

I caught Killer Joe immediately afterward and that one was even better than I was hoping for. Had such momentum the movie felt like it was only like a half-hour long. Usually with the pitch-black comedies I end up laughing because things are uncomfortable and I squirm a lot more. This was just a blast. Way more crowd-pleasing than I ever thought it could be.

I also appreciate the nod you gave us Moonrise Kingdom fans. I understand how one might recoil from the abundance of sweetness on display, but some of us don’t have girlfriends or cats to help us meet our adorability-quotient in life. We need these movies. Especially the ones that do far more right than they do wrong.

Don’t throw them under the bus!
