40th Anniversary Gala Preview: Live Auction!

At the end of any great evening, you want to come home with a couple of things: photos of you in your evening-out attire, tired feet still tapping to the tunes of the music you danced to, and great memories of fun and laughter with friends, new and old. Thanks to the generous donations of the friends of the NWFC, we are thrilled to be able to send you home with (at least) one more thing at the end of next weekend’s 40th Anniversary Gala- an incredible auction package!

Here’s a little preview of some of the auction packages we’ll have available at next weekend’s Live Auction- get excited! (And start making friends- you want to be on the good side of whoever goes home with “A Week in Provence!“)

A Visit to Portlandia

Head behind the scenes of IFC’s hit show Portlandia! This package includes a visit to the Season 3 set for you and a guest. Meet the production crew, grab an autographed show poster, and- if you’re lucky- see if you can snag a spot on-screen as an extra.

Filmmaker’s Dinner at Grüner with Todd Haynes & Jon Raymond

The Portland duo behind the award-winning HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce wants to take you (and eight of your closest friends) out to dinner! Join director Todd Haynes (Safe, Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, I’m Not There) and writer (Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy, Meek’s Cut Off) and producer Jon Raymond at 2012 James Beard Award Winning Restaurant Grüner. Their decadent seasonal offerings, highlighting the bounty of the Pacific Northwest, pair well with sparkling conversation and a bottle of Gewürztraminer- take our word for it.

A Week in Provence

Just north of Avignon,  Châteauneuf-du-Pape has been producing world-class wines (and a few popes, for good measure) for centuries. Make yourself at home in a lovely village house in the heart of the Southern Rhone country, surrounded by France’s most renowned wine producers. Enjoy the beautiful countryside that inspired artists from Cezanne to Matisse, immerse yourself in papal history (Châteauneuf-du-Pape means, roughly, “the Pope’s new castle”)… and did we mention the wine?

AND THAT’S NOT ALL! We have a host of wonderful silent and live auction items- to see for yourself, join us at the Northwest Film Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala, Saturday, May 12th, 2012.

40th Anniversary Gala Preview: Firesteed Winery

“And wine can of their wits the wise beguile, make the sage frolic, and the serious smile.”          -Alexander Pope

We know you’ve been wondering- what delicious beverages will we be drinking on this momentous occasion, the long-awaited celebration of 40 years of fantastic films and fabulous filmmakers? On this note, the Northwest Film Center is extremely pleased to announce another major sponsor of the upcoming 40th Anniversary Gala: Firesteed Winery.

Since the early 1990s, Howard Rossbach of Firesteed Winery has been carefully sourcing the best fruit that the wine countries of the Pacific Northwest, and select international regions, and producing consistently well-made and enjoyable wines. Firesteed has produced wines from all of the major viticultural appellations in Oregon, including: the Willamette Valley, the Umpqua Valley, the Rogue Valley of western Oregon and the Walla Walla Valley in eastern Oregon.

For the first decade of business, Rossbach ran a “virtual winery, without his own vineyards. However, since 2003, Firesteed has been producing wine from the 90 acres surrounding their popular tasting room and retail shop in the Eola Hills appellation. In 2006, Rossbach began work on another 200-acre plot, lovingly dubbed the “Erratic Oaks” property.

Firesteed commands a dedicated following throughout the entire Pacific Northwest and beyond. Two decades of fine wine making, dedication to sourcing the highest quality of grapes, and a commitment to showcasing the best that the Oregon wine countries have to offer, are but a few of the reasons we are thrilled to have them on board for the Gala.

Stay tuned for more wine and food details- coming soon! Tickets and more information about the 40th Anniversary Gala can be found here.

40th Anniversary Gala Preview: China Forbes

We are thrilled to announce that Portland-based and widely-renowned vocalist China Forbes will be performing at the upcoming 40th Anniversary Gala. For the last decade, China has toured the world as lead vocalist of the “little-orchestra,” the 13-member ensemble known as Pink Martini. Performances in Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Canada, and the US (among others), including stops at Carnegie Hall and London’s Hammersmith Apollo, have garnered China and Pink Martini a devoted international following- a following stronger than anywhere in their home-base of Portland, Oregon. In 2008, China released her long-awaited solo album, ’78, to widespread acclaim.

For the 40th Anniversary Gala, China will be performing with The Bureau of Standards Big Band, a 20-piece ensemble based in Portland. The self-titled “Purveyors of Swing & Fling,” the Bureau of Standards has evolved from a casual, after-work jam session between co-workers to something of a local institution, selling out monthly performances at Tony Starlight’s Supper Club & Lounge for several years, and building a devoted local following.

China Forbes and the Bureau of Standards Big Band will be performing live at the Northwest Film Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala, Saturday, May 12th, 2012. We don’t expect you to be that patient, though- have a listen here while you wait.

40-Second Gift for 40 Years of Film

The Newsroom has been abuzz with news of our 40th Anniversary events including teasers of what’s to come at our 40s-themed glamorous Gala on May 12. You may also remember the Make it Short contest, where lovely NW Makers came together to show off their 40-second shorts, well we received a 40th anniversary gift in that style from experimental animator Devon Demonte:

“Rubbings of the historic Moviola editing machine from NW Film Center’s School of Film are animated by cameraless methods using only photocopies and adhesive tape onto 16mm film leader. Inspired by NWFC’s 40 second movies project, this is exactly 40 seconds long, 960 frames of picture. The variations in grid square size are the result of the Moviola’s metal footpedal being worn down in the editing of countless movies. This evidence of millions of miles of film footage, lovingly cut by scores of editors is recast upon wings of light via crotchety projection contraptions in wishing NWFC all the best for the next 40 years.”

40th Anniversary Gala Preview: Boy and Bean

Boy and Bean, local swing/jazz trio, has made a name for themselves with their faithful covers— with a modern twist— of Depression-era songs from the ’20s, ’30s, and of course, the ’40s. Husband-and-wife duo Luke Short and Amber Short harmonize beautifully on vocals,  with Luke also on guitar, and Andrew Jones on upright bass. Covering songs by The Mills Brothers, The Boswell Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and crooners of days-gone-by, Boy and Bean will be a fabulous addition to a fabulous evening at our 40th Anniversary Gala.

Boy and Bean will be playing at the NW Film Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala, on Saturday, May 12th, 2012, during the Silent Auction. Can’t wait? Have a listen here.

MAKE IT SHORT: Talking With Kurtis Hough About His Viral Submission

Kurtis Hough’s entry to our MAKE IT SHORT contest (the one rule: to keep the total running time at 40 seconds or under–in celebration of 40 years of the Film Center in the making!) made a big splash, pun intended. Going viral on the Internet, with half a million hits in one day, was just the beginning for this tragic movie with a happy ending.

Kurtis took the time to tell us a little more about this short, and his interest in video and animation:
