AYT #65: Spectacle Fatigue Syndrome

Cumberbatch

This week, Joe and Erik dig deep and try to figure out why some huge spectacle films work and some don’t. They disagree on Star Trek Into Darkness and also include Fast & Furious 6 in a chat about Spectacle Fatigue Syndrome. But they can’t help but gush over Noah Baumbach‘s latest film, Frances Ha (look for a special, interview edition with Baumbach later this week) which opens in Portland at Cinema 21 for a weeklong run. Also, don’t forget about the one-night only premiere screening for City Baby also at Cinema 21.

AYT #64: A Stroll Around Noir Ville

Killing

This week, Joe dodged a bullet and Erik rants about his deep displeasure for Baz Lahmurnn‘s latest glitzy spectacle, The Great Gatsby. Then it’s on to films actually worth seeing and talking about, as we dive in to the very exciting series at Cinema 21, Return to Noir Ville, which starts this friday and runs for two weeks. There’s a ton of great titles to check out, all in wonderful 35 mm. We’re taking next week off, but we’ll still have bonus content for you.

Trailer of the Day: The Shining

TheShining1Jack

Adapting Stephen King’s best-selling horror novel, Kubrick cast Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, an out-of-work teacher who accepts employment as the winter caretaker of the haunted Overlook Hotel. After settling in with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd), Jack slowly discovers that the hotel has its own terrifying agenda. Jack’s degeneration from begrudging husband/father to murderous animal allows Kubrick to deftly subvert preconceptions of masculinity and patrimony while crafting one of the scariest films ever made. (119 mins.)

From April 12-18, Cinema 21 is playing the new documentary ROOM 237, a dive into the world of THE SHINING’s ardent fans and scholars and their divergent claims of having decoded the film’s hidden symbolism and secret messages—genocide, government conspiracies, dark hidden history, and more. Perhaps time to take a fresh look at a Kubrick classic!

THE SHINING screens on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 at 7p.m. in our Whitsell Auditorium (located in the Portland Art Museum).

Advanced tickets are available for purchase here.

AYT #61: Oblivious To The Mysteries Of Room 237

Room-237

This week, Joe and Erik talk about what seems to be the first movie of the Summer season, the new Tom Cruise science fiction film Oblivion. They also throw in another addition of Laptop Cinema, in which they each recommend a film available to stream online. Lastly, in the highlight for this week’s show, Erik chats with director Rodney Ascher about his new film, Room 237, a fantastic documentary about the many possible interpretations of Stanley Kubrick‘s The Shining. The film, which we reviewed last year (and Erik chose as his #2 film of 2012), opens on VOD and in Portland (plus other select cities) for a week long run at Cinema 21.

AYT #58: We Need To Talk About Lynne Ramsay

Lynne ramsay

This week, Joe and Erik get all free-form and jazzy on the show, talking about a host of topics to avoid reviewing any of the lame new releases this week. The most time is devoted to an AYT favorite who’s been in the news of late: filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, who recently left the Natalie Portman vehicle Jane Got A Gun the day it was to go in production. Next we discuss the legacy of Fritz Lang‘s masterpiece M, which is screening along with Night of the Hunter for a weeklong run at Cinema 21 in Portland. In the last major segment amongst the other topics, we bring back Love It // Hate It.

Listeners of the show living in Portland can still win free passes good for two people to see Stoker from Monday through Thursday at Regal’s Fox Tower Theater. To win, correctly answer this trivia question: name all three titles of South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy. Email your answers to adjustyourtracking@gmail.com to claim your prize. Limited passes available.

AYT #51: PIFF Effects

Post-Tenebras-Lux-reygadas-photo-cannes

It’s a packed show this week on AYT. Joe and Erik start out with a review of another Steven Soderbergh film (his last release, apparently), the thriller Side Effects which opens this friday in theaters everywhere. Then it’s on to some PIFF 36 recommendations, as the festival kicked off yesterday and runs until February 23. Next, a chat about the latest series at Cinema 21, Notes From the Underground. And that’s not all, as we have another Laptop Cinema recommendation for you.

AYT #44: Killing Hitchcock Softly

KILLING-THEM-SOFTLY-POSTER-header

This week, Erik remedied his jealousy by catching up with Killing Them Softly, so he and Joe give a proper review to that film. Then it’s on to an Alfred Hitchcock biopic double feature as they discuss new releases Hitchcock and The Girl. Following that is a brief chat about underrated films from Hitchcock’s deep filmography. Lastly, we revisit our second episode of the podcast and reassess our most anticipated films of 2012 list to see how our picks turned out. Don’t forget Cinema 21 is showing four Kubrick films starting this weekend.

AYT #35: Watch These Films Alone?

This week we review the controversial indie film Compliance, which opens at Cinema 21 next Friday, September 21. We recommend not bringing a first date to this movie, and also mention it as perhaps a one-time watcher. With that in mind, we delve in to a larger discussion of bad date/one-time watch movies you may be better off seeing alone.

Adjust Your Tracking #10: We Talk To (And About) Kevin

Adjust Your Tracking is the podcast produced through the facilities of the Northwest Film Center Newsroom. The show is hosted by Joe von Appen and Erik McClanahan, and produced by Jessica Lyness and Laurel Degutis. Opinions expressed are that of the hosts, and not necessarily of the Northwest Film Center.

This week we review two very different films coming out this Friday, “The Hunger Games” and “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” and favor one much more than the other. We also get in to a broader discussion of franchise movies in Hollywood these days, and then finish off as Erik chats on the phone with ‘Kevin’ actor Ezra Miller.

Room 529: A Conversation With Wim Wenders

We all remember the short week ago when Wim Wenders came to town and introduced PINA 3d for Portland audiences at Cinema 21.

A handful of School of Film students, who completed the Certificate Program, took advantage of the opportunity and interviewed Wenders in :r00m 529 at the Hotel Modera (thanks Matt Schulte!).

Here are the filmmaking secrets Andrew Price, Michael Roberson, Melissa Gregory Rue, and Jarratt Taylor coaxed out of Wenders:
