AYT Deathmatch: Spring Breakers vs. Pain & Gain

pain-and-gain-poster-1This week, in lieu of a proper episode of the podcast, we present something new called AYT Deathmatch, in which Erik or Joe squares off with a guest on a topic — films, directors, whatever — they violently disagree on, in order to claim a winner, or at least come to some kind of understanding as to where each person is coming from. In this inaugural episode, Erik brings on friend and colleague Oktay Ege Kozak, film critic for Oregon Herald, Bitch Magazine and Beyazperde, to discuss two strangely similar films released in theaters within the same general time frame this year, Harmony Korine‘s Spring Breakers and Michael Bay‘s Pain & Gain. AYT Interview: Christopher Bell

A special bonus edition of the podcast, in which host Erik McClanahan interviews New York filmmaker Christopher Bell, whose short film Bridges premiered online last week over at The Playlist (part of Indiewire‘s Blog Network). Bell is also in post-production on his first full-length feature film, The Winds That Scatter. Chris, as a filmmaker, came to the attention of Erik after he found one of his previous short films online, Pilgrimage, a very funny, awkward and honest tale about two old friend reuniting in college for a night, only to find they have next to nothing in common anymore. AYT #62: Here’s Mud In Malick’s Eye

This week, Joe and Erik have mostly avoided the recent nice weather in their fair city of Portland, choosing instead to see a lot of the exciting releases of late and pack in four reviews in this show. They start with Jeff Nichols‘ new film starring Matthew McConaughey, Mud. Then it’s on to one of Erik’s most anticipated films of the year, Upstream Color (still showing at the Hollywood Theater in Portland for another week before soon going to VOD and DVD next month), a film that oddly shares a tonal and stylistic feel to the latest Terrence Malick film, To the Wonder, opening this Friday at Cinema 21. The last review is a brief one as Erik gives his thoughts on the latest Rob Zombie horror movie, Lords of Salem, which is tied in to another edition of Make It Stop.

This week, Joe and Erik talk about what seems to be the first movie of the Summer season, the new Tom Cruise science fiction film Oblivion. They also throw in another addition of Laptop Cinema, in which they each recommend a film available to stream online. Lastly, in the highlight for this week’s show, Erik chats with director Rodney Ascher about his new film, Room 237, a fantastic documentary about the many possible interpretations of Stanley Kubrick‘s The Shining. The film, which we reviewed last year (and Erik chose as his #2 film of 2012), opens on VOD and in Portland (plus other select cities) for a week long run at Cinema 21.
