AYT #62: Here’s Mud In Malick’s Eye

Mud

This week, Joe and Erik have mostly avoided the recent nice weather in their fair city of Portland, choosing instead to see a lot of the exciting releases of late and pack in four reviews in this show. They start with Jeff Nichols‘ new film starring Matthew McConaughey, Mud. Then it’s on to one of Erik’s most anticipated films of the year, Upstream Color (still showing at the Hollywood Theater in Portland for another week before soon going to VOD and DVD next month), a film that oddly shares a tonal and stylistic feel to the latest Terrence Malick film, To the Wonder, opening this Friday at Cinema 21. The last review is a brief one as Erik gives his thoughts on the latest Rob Zombie horror movie, Lords of Salem, which is tied in to another edition of Make It Stop.

AYT #61: Oblivious To The Mysteries Of Room 237

Room-237

This week, Joe and Erik talk about what seems to be the first movie of the Summer season, the new Tom Cruise science fiction film Oblivion. They also throw in another addition of Laptop Cinema, in which they each recommend a film available to stream online. Lastly, in the highlight for this week’s show, Erik chats with director Rodney Ascher about his new film, Room 237, a fantastic documentary about the many possible interpretations of Stanley Kubrick‘s The Shining. The film, which we reviewed last year (and Erik chose as his #2 film of 2012), opens on VOD and in Portland (plus other select cities) for a week long run at Cinema 21.

AYT #59: Like Juice

PLACE BEYOND THE PINES

This week, Joe and Erik fill the show out with a hat trick of reviews of new releases: The Place Beyond the Pines, Wrong and the remake of Evil Dead. But they do break up all the review chatter by bringing back the segment Make It Stop, in which they demand that an annoying trend in movies must come to an end.

AYT #58: We Need To Talk About Lynne Ramsay

Lynne ramsay

This week, Joe and Erik get all free-form and jazzy on the show, talking about a host of topics to avoid reviewing any of the lame new releases this week. The most time is devoted to an AYT favorite who’s been in the news of late: filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, who recently left the Natalie Portman vehicle Jane Got A Gun the day it was to go in production. Next we discuss the legacy of Fritz Lang‘s masterpiece M, which is screening along with Night of the Hunter for a weeklong run at Cinema 21 in Portland. In the last major segment amongst the other topics, we bring back Love It // Hate It.

Listeners of the show living in Portland can still win free passes good for two people to see Stoker from Monday through Thursday at Regal’s Fox Tower Theater. To win, correctly answer this trivia question: name all three titles of South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook’s Vengeance Trilogy. AYT #57: Look At Harmony’s Sheeeeit!

james-franco-spring-breakers-image

This week, Joe and Erik devote the entire show to a very special filmmaker we both admire: Harmony Korine. His latest film as writer/director, Spring Breakers, comes out this week and it inspires a lot of chatter about Korine, his career and where to start with him if you’re new to his brand of cinema. In the final segment of the show, Erik interviews Korine himself over the phone.

Stoker-1993581-header

This week, Joe and Erik review two new films out in theaters, both English language debuts from foreign filmmakers: Dead Man Down, starring Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace, and Stoker with Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska. We also briefly get in to the career of Stoker‘s director, Park Chan-wook, and recommend his many films that are available for streaming online.

AYT #54: War Witches vs. Giant Slayers

war_witch1

This week, Joe and Erik pack in a lot of topics, starting with thoughts on the Oscars and especially the controversy over the visual effects picketing go on during the ceremony and the fallout for companies making amazing digital effects for the movies. Check out this article by Drew McWeeny over at HitFix for context. Then it’s on to a chat about the new movie Jack the Giant Slayer, which Erik saw and gives his thoughts on, but this also leads to a brief discussion of director Bryan Singer‘s career to date as well as the difference between escapist movie experiences and the often more lasting experience of serious arthouse fare. This leads us to our review of the excellent foreign film War Witch, which we caught at PIFF recently and opens in Portland at the end of March.
